    If you walked into a family home in Europe any time up through the late 1600s, you would wonder where anyone sat. Soft, padded furniture was not common. People sat on backless benches, trunks, and individual chairs with minimal padding. The sofa or couch as we know it simply didn’t yet exist.

    Furniture designed for reclining has existed for centuries—they had them in ancient Rome, and low pieces of furniture covered with cushions and blankets were common in the Middle East. But it wasn’t until the 1670s that English and French furniture makers developed wider cushioned chairs that resemble the sofas of today.

    What is believed to be one of the first modern sofas ever built still exists. Built around 1690, it’s in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Its maker called it a “double Windsor chair without division.” While it’s lushly upholstered with rich brocade fabric, the piece is only lightly padded—it’s hardly the cozy seat you’d expect to see.

    The term “sofa,” which is believed to be adapted from the Arabic word “sopha” or “suffah,” which means “cushion,” didn’t take off in England as quickly as it did in France. Nevertheless, the French word for sofa is canapé, which in English means an appetizer or hors d’oeuvre.

    As sofas became commonplace in French drawing rooms and parlors, a new style of sitting arose. Instead of sitting stiff and straight, ladies of nobility were painted reclining, sitting with their feet tucked up under them, and generally lounging on their lovely, comfortable new sofas. The change in posture was so extreme that German visitors to the French court remarked at the undignified postures, remarking that it no longer looked like a Royal court.
